About Town of Kapuskasing

Kapuskasing is a single-tier municipality in Northern Ontario, located in the Cochrane District. It carries the motto “Model Town of the North.” The town originated around 1911 with the construction of the National Transcontinental Railway. It was initially named MacPherson until 1917, when it was renamed Kapuskasing. Kapuskasing functions as a regional service hub for surrounding communities. Its economy has long been anchored in the forest industry, particularly pulp & paper production and wood processing. With a population exceeding 8,000 (2021 census), Kapuskasing features a significant Franco-Ontario population. Local governance is led by a mayor and municipal council, who oversee municipal services, planning, infrastructure, and regional development.
